"Gold Kills Too" is a thriller set in West Africa (Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Mauritania) where Frank Gauthier is teaching geology. Frank's innovative approach to teaching brings him, his students and, fortunately for Frank, Sergeant N'Diouf, a former Senegalese commando, to the North of the Country on a field trip.
A Canadian mining company gets wind of Frank's trip and recruits him to have a look at some outcrops it has not accessed to, because the French want to keep the area off limits. A French mining company is also informed of Frank's field trips and does everything in its power to stop him from going. An American mining corporation is also informed of the field trip and sees to it that the thing is cancelled.
Frank suddenly finds himself in the middle of a border dispute between Senegal and Guinea Bissau, accused of leading a group of mercenaries, intent to overthrow Sékou Touré, and accused of murdering a few Senegalese soldiers. Being nosy is not a capital sin yet! Frank and N'Diouf, the former Senegalese commando, manage to fend off their pursuer with the help of thefamily, Swiss nuns, and friends. They also manage to leave Guinea un-harmed and get back to Senegal, where it becomes obvious that more than the Canadian outfit is involved in the scheme. Powerful American and French interests, as well as corrupted politicians are all intent in making sure that Frank's silenced for good.
"Gold kills too" is a page turner. It does not let the reader down. The action is swift and fascinating , still entirely believable. The reader will know who did what only in the last few pages of the book. Is it possible that Frank survives this second hurdle to recount how he may have survived yet another adventure?
